Introducing THE fabric nightclub, London! After setting up our owner’s house as a shoot location, fabric had to be next in line for our location library. Join us as we have a chat with the Brand and Corporate Events Director, Phoebe Fuller, and find out more about the venue.

Introduction

Introducing THE fabric, London. After setting up our owner’s house as a shoot location, fabric just had to be next in line.

The iconic, multi-functional space is primarily used as a nightclub, although it doesn’t end there. The location is a network of independent levels, rooms and areas that can be configured in a number of ways. Not only does this make it an excellent venue regardless of brief, it’s extremely versatile and a perfect shoot location for your next film or production.

Hello Phoebe, please introduce yourself and tell us about your job at fabric?

Hello, it’s great to be interviewed by the Location Creation team so thank you for reaching out to us.

I joined fabric nearly a year ago now, and it has certainly flown by! I came on as the Brand and Corporate Events Director having had lots of experience working in the events world both in and outside of venues. I essentially look after anything happening outside of the nightclub, which mostly takes place Monday-Friday.

My role is very much 360 in that I sell, deliver and market the space for private events. Since joining, I have worked with a multitude of clients such as, Deloitte, ROLI, Autex Acoustics and many more. We are a super flexible space with infinite possibilities and can host a variety of events from gala dinners, awards ceremonies, afterparties, conferences, film or photography shoots, product launches and much more!

What is your favourite thing about working for fabric?

I love the versatility of my role.

Some weeks it’s producing a 900 people-strong architecture industry wrap party with Groove Armada playing… the next, it’s a week-long feature film starring Jason Statham… and the week after, it’s team meetings for marketing and general updates, followed by back to back site visits with prospective clients.

For those who don’t know, could you tell us a little bit about the history of fabric?

fabric opened on October 22, 1999, by Keith Reilly and Cameron Leslie. It was established in a renovated Victorian warehouse in Smithfield, adjacent to the historic Smithfield Market. The space was used as the underground cold store for the Meat Market when founded.

Keith and Cameron aimed to use the space to become a nightclub that prioritised music and atmosphere over commercial trends, offering a space for authentic clubbing experiences.

The club’s design features three rooms with independent sound systems, including the notable “bodysonic” dancefloor in Room One, which allows guests and dancers to feel the bass through vibrating floors.

The first event kicked off with a drum and bass party, setting a precedent for Friday nights featuring bass-heavy sounds. fabric quickly became known for its independent sound systems, vibrating “bodysonic” dancefloor, and live music.

What filming and events has the venue held over the years?

Over the past twenty five years we have seen the space grow and evolve while hosting a massive variety of events. We’ve had some huge names perform such as Carl Cox, Iggy Azalea and The Chemical Brothers. We’ve also had some iconic brands in, such as Nike, Vivienne Westwood, Timberland and Red Bull.

Some more recent film and events work to mention, like that feature film starring Jason Statham, Netflix’s Gangs of London, we also had Paramount +s The Agency, and the Autex Acoustics wrap party for Clerkenwell Design Week.

What would you love to see shot at fabric next?

I would love to see the venue used for something outside of being a nightclub such as a period drama or a huge banquet dinner which can be filmed in Room 1 and would look really beautiful. One of our main strengths is that we are a blank canvas space and can be brought to life in any way shape or form.

A final word from Location Creation

Incredible! Thank you for your time Phoebe, I am sure location managers cannot wait to get their hands on this venue for their next filming brief.
